First edition of the SLICES-FR School in Lyon: a week of innovation and exchange
From July 7 to 11, 2025, the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon hosted the first edition of the SLICES-FR School, an event co-organized with the PEPR Cloud and Networks of the Future in collaboration with the GDR RSD with support from Inria and the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon. Over five days, researchers, engineers, and professionals explored advances across the digital continuum (IoT/networks/edge/cloud) and the construction of scientific communities involved in the Slices-FR initiative.
A first edition rich in discoveries
The SLICES-FR Research Infrastructure, the French node of SLICES (Scientific Large Scale Infrastructure for Computing/Communication Experimental Studies, https://slices-ri.eu) aims to enable experimentation across the entire IoT/networks/edge/cloud continuum by offering a holistic view of the entire data chain, from capture to processing, transport, and storage. It benefits from more than twenty years of experience gained through platforms such as Grid’5000 and FIT. The goal? To build an experimentation tool for designing new services and applications, offering a holistic view of the entire data chain, from capture to processing, transport, and storage.
This school brought together colleagues working on experimental research in networks and systems (network protocols and services, radio technologies, IoT, parallel or distributed computing, Cloud, Edge, Fog, applications, etc.) using digital platforms. It also contributed to defining requirements and experiments, as well as participating in the development of the SLICES-FR platform.
The program included guest presentations, practical workshops, and roundtable discussions led by experts. Participants were able to discuss innovative projects while addressing issues such as the energy impact of infrastructure and network modeling. Platform users, experimental researchers, and software and tool developers came to present their work in progress, feedback, and descriptions of tools and frameworks.
A success for the scientific and industrial community: The event brought together many members of the SLICES-FR community, an infrastructure dedicated to large-scale experimentation. This initiative responds to the growing need for collaborative research and sustainable technological solutions.
